SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn | Navigating open access publishing: opportunities\, challenges\, and quality checks
DESCRIPTION:Description\nIn the last years\, the spreading of open access publications has significantly reshaped the research landscape. Wider and easier knowledge dissemination is probably the main positive effect of open access policies. Nowadays\, researchers and readers from all over the world can publish or read articles with limited to no fees. New publishing groups and journals are surfacing\, revitalising an almost frozen publishing environment. \nWhile previous distortions are over\, new ones are taking over. Indeed\, in a fast-paced academic environment led by “publish or perish” pressures\, the proliferation of paper mills and predatory journals jeopardises scientific integrity. In parallel\, academic publishing companies need to find a balance between adopting the open access approach and maintaining their market share. One consequence is the rise of Article Processing Charges (APCs)\, which ultimately create new access barriers for researchers. \nHow to benefit from open access while preserving scientific integrity\, then? This presentation will provide an overview of the opportunities provided by open access publications – while outlining the related risks. The talk will also propose some tips and quality checks that might help authors\, but also readers\, to navigate this perilous yet fascinating landscape. \nSpeaker\nGiulia Tilenni is the technology monitoring expert at Andra’s scientific direction. Her missions include delivering in-house methodological training on information collection and monitoring tools. During her eight years-long professional career\, she has been working for companies of all sizes\, specialising in multiple angles of strategic intelligence – reputation monitoring\, competitive intelligence\, and industry insights – applied to different sectors (from international organisations to banks and luxury companies\, as well as nuclear authorities). In parallel\, she has been a freelance analyst for different European defence media outlets for a decade. \nPractical information\nClick here to register for this Lunch & Learn session. SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn | Criticality Safety for Deep Geological Repositories
DESCRIPTION:Description\nDeep geological repositories (DGR) are designed to ensure the safe disposal of radioactive waste over very long timescales. Ensuring and demonstrating the criticality safety of a DGR is a safety requirement in all national programmes that must dispose of high-level radioactive waste such as spent nuclear fuel. Assessing criticality safety in the repository post-closure phase presents unique challenges due to the exceptionally long timescales involved. The EURAD-2 Work Package 17 “Criticality Safety for Disposal” (CSFD) is undertaking innovative research and development to address these challenges and strengthen the technical basis for demonstrating post-closure criticality safety. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of the art as documented in the WP-17 initial SoTA report\, introduce the key objectives and activities of the work package\, and present the current status of the ongoing R&D programme. \nSpeaker\nDr. Madalina Wittel\, Senior Specialist Radioactive Materials at Nagra – National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste. \nPractical information\nClick here to register for this Lunch & Learn session.
