SUMMARY:EURAD-2 webinar – Domain Insight 4.2.1 on perturbations
DESCRIPTION:The host rock is the natural barrier that hosts the underground structure of the geological disposal facility (GDF). It  has a crucial contribution in either the isolation of the waste (crystalline rock) or the containment of radionuclides in the waste (clay and salt rocks). The host rock can be perturbed by the chemical and physical interactions between barriers in the post-closure evolution of a disposal system with natural and engineered barriers\, geomorphological processes induced by climate change and tectonic activity. Perturbations to the host rock are also made during construction\, operation and closure of the GDF. The overall goal of this Perturbations domain is to characterize the potential impact of disposal facility construction\, operation and closure on the natural geological barrier as extracted from the EURAD Roadmap goals breakdown structure (GBS). This is supplemented by typical activities\, according to phase of implementation\, needed to achieve this characterization of perturbations. Activities are generic and are common to most geological disposal programmes. \nSpeaker: Erika Neeft (COVRA\, The Netherlands)

SUMMARY:InCoManD webinar | Peridynamic models for corrosion damage and fracture
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nMaterials degrade in various ways: some corrode\, some erode\, some fracture. I will discuss our recent results on quantitative predictions for these phenomena. These results are obtained using Peridynamic (PD) models\, which offer new ways to simulate complex problems by eliminating restricting assumptions inherent in classical models\, like differentiability of the unknowns. I will explain how these models differ from those based on partial-differential equations and show why they may offer better solutions for simulating the evolution of corrosion damage\, for example. Three-dimensional models for pitting corrosion\, intergranular corrosion\, crevice corrosion\, galvanic corrosion\, and stress corrosion cracking will be presented. Since PD models tend to be computationally costly\, I will present a new discretization approach\, the Fast Convolution-Based Method (FCBM) for efficient PD simulations. Extensions of these models to other similar types of physical phenomena\, like erosion\, melting and dissolution\, coupled with fracture or not\, are possible. \nSpeaker\nDr. Florin Bobaru is the Robert W. Brightfelt Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his M.Sc. in Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids from the University of Bucharest\, Romania in 1997\, and Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University\, Ithaca\, NY\, USA in 2001. He is one of the first contributors to peridynamic modeling for dynamic fracture and damage and has introduced peridynamics for corrosion damage. He was a Visiting Professor/Visiting Scholar at the University of Padova\, Italy (2015\, 2022)\, Caltech (2011)\, Cambridge University (2008)\, and Sandia National Laboratory (2002-2004\, 2005\, 2009). He organized the first Workshop on “Nonlocal Damage and Failure: Peridynamics and Other Nonlocal Models”\, sponsored by the USACM and held in San Antonio\, Texas\, in 2013. In October 2023\, he co-organized and taught an advanced course at CISM\, Udine\, Italy\, on “Peridynamic Models for Material Degradation”. He is the editor of the “Handbook of Peridynamic Modeling” (2016)\, an Associate Editor for the “Journal of Peridynamics and Nonlocal Modeling” (Springer)\, and a regional editor for “International Journal of Fracture” (Springer). His paper on “Peridynamic modeling of repassivation in pitting corrosion of stainless steel” published in CORROSION journal was awarded the 2020 CORROSION Best Paper Award by NACE (now AMPP). \nPractical information\nLink to the webinar will be sent to you prior to the webinar by the organisers.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn | PIANOFORTE Explained: Europe’s Partnership for Radiation Protection Research
DESCRIPTION:Description\nRadiation protection is a cornerstone of public health\, occupational safety\, nuclear safety\, civil security\, and environmental stewardship. The European Partnership on Radiation Protection Research (PIANOFORTE) carries out the research necessary to support the highest level of protection for the public\, workers\, patients\, and the environment across all exposure scenarios. Its aim is also to formulate science-based recommendations for decision-makers across sectors utilising ionising radiation\, enabling them to advance innovation while maintaining high safety standards.\nLaunched in 2022 with 58 partners and a total budget of €46 million\, the partnership has rapidly grown to more than 120 partners. It currently funds 30 research projects addressing priority topics identified by the European radiation protection community\, with a total allocated budget of €35 million.\nThe objective of this webinar is to present PIANOFORTE to the EURAD-2 community. In view of the forthcoming finalisation of PIANOFORTE’s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA)\, the session will also provide an opportunity to explore potential synergies between the partnership’s activities. This will be achieved by identifying areas of common interest and discussing concrete possibilities for collaboration.\nParticular attention will be given to topics at the interface between the two partnerships\, including medical and industrial waste management and the development of circular economy approaches in radioactive waste management. \nSpeakers\nGéraldine Pina is both an electrical engineer and a physician specialising in nuclear medicine and medical biology. An associate professor in Lyon\, she is an expert in CBRN risks and a military reservist. Recipient of some of France’s highest honours\, she has been involved in key emergency preparedness and medical response education programmes nationwide. She was appointed Commissioner at the French Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ASNR) by presidential decree on 15 December 2020. She is actively engaged in the international radiation protection community\, contributing to the work of the IAEA\, ICRP\, UNSCEAR and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA) and is coordinator of the PIANOFORTE European Partnership on behalf of ASNR. \nDr Florian Rauser has been Vice-President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and permanent representative of the President since June 2019. Dr Rauser holds a degree in physics and a doctorate in geosciences from the University of Hamburg. After studying at the Universities of Marburg and Brisbane\, he first worked as a scientist and science manager for the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. Before his current position\, he was head of the Municipal Climate Protection Division at the Jülich Research Centre as project manager for the National Climate Initiative. In addition to specialist topics of the BfS\, the Vice President’s main areas of focus include issues relating to international stakeholder work\, the transformation of administration\, quality\, integrity and sustainability. \nManon Thiercelin is a PhD fellow at SCK CEN and KU Leuven in Belgium. She graduated in social and cultural anthropology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Throughout her master’s program\, she developed a deep interest in the study of science and technology through a social lens. Her doctoral research follows the same line of interest and investigates the factors that drive or hinder the implementation of Circular Economy practices in NORM-related industries. The research builds on practice theory and a qualitative multi-methods approach. \nRecording
