SUMMARY:InCoManD webinars on microbial activity | Predicting and Managing Microbial Activity in Deep Geological Repositories
DESCRIPTION:Deep geological repositories (DGRs) evolve through coupled thermal\, hydraulic\, mechanical\, chemical\, and biological processes. Within this multi-barrier system\, microorganisms naturally present in host rocks — as well as those introduced during construction and operation — may induce corrosion\, gas production\, and mineral transformations\, all of which are relevant for predicting the long-term performance and stability of a repository. \nThis session provides a structured introduction to microbiology in the DGR environment\, focusing on safety-relevant processes and their implications for engineered barrier systems. Selected experimental case studies from EPFL will illustrate how microbial activity is investigated under repository-relevant conditions\, with reference to the Swiss repository concept proposed by Nagra. DESCRIPTION:Course description \nThis three-day course offers an introduction to geopolymers with a strong focus on their application for radioactive waste immobilisation. SUMMARY:EURAD-2 Webinar | Domain Insight 3.2.2\, on LL-ILW containers
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nLow and intermediate level waste (LL&ILW) represent the main part of the volume of radioactive waste which are produced by nuclear industry. This waste contains a large variety of materials such as paper\, cardboard\, plastics and metals with. The waste can also vary strongly in size and weight. Therefore\, there is a need of various containers designs in order to condition the LL&ILW considering their physical and chemical properties. The main safety functions of a radioactive waste repository for Low Level and Intermediate Level Waste (LL-ILW) are the isolation\, the containment and the shielding of the waste. Other safety functions can also be considered\, such as the retardation of the radionuclide transport and maintaining stable conditions in the repository. The fulfillment of these safety functions relies amongst other on the Engineered Barrier System (EBS). During all the phases of the disposal programme\, from its initiation to the closure of the disposal facility\, safety assessments are performed and requirements are defined and updated in order to guarantee the safe management of the radioactive waste (during the operational and post-closure phases of the facility). The requirements for the design of LL-ILW containers are related to those for the disposal facility. The container requirements shall take into account the surrounding Systems Structures and Components (SSC’s)\, as well as the external and internal potential perturbations (e.g. physico-chemical reactions) which could affect them. Depending on the concept of the repository and the defined safety functions and objectives\, various materials such as concrete or steel can be used for manufacturing LL-ILW containers fulfilling the requirements. Such materials are currently used for the containers in various near surface LL-ILW disposal facilities currently in operation in countries such as France (CSA\, Aube)\, the UK (LLWR\, West Cumbria) and Spain (El Cabril\, Cordoba). SUMMARY:Online Training Sessions – Impact of Climate Change on Radioactive Waste Management
DESCRIPTION:Content\nWithin WP 11 CLIMATE Task 2\, two online training sessions on the impact of climate change on radioactive waste management will be organized on 19 and 20 May 2026\, from 9:00-13:00 CEST. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend both sessions (see below). Attending the first session is highly recommended to be able to understand the second session. Registrations\, free of charge\, can be done at the top of this page. Registrations will close on Thursday 7 May. \nDescription \nThe first session (Tuesday 19 May) is a general session. Through several lectures\, fundamental concepts related to the causes of climate change will be presented\, covering different time periods in the past as well as possible future developments. The session will also address how climate models and broader climate knowledge can be used in different ways to define future climate scenarios relevant for radioactive waste management. This includes both the construction and operational phases of disposal facilities\, as well as the very long-term post-closure phase. Particular attention will be given to the different sources of uncertainty and to approaches for taking these uncertainties into account. The session will conclude with the presentation of the climate add-on for the PEP serious game. \nThe second session (Wednesday 20 May) will focus in more detail on several specific processes that are strongly driven by climate change and whose assessment can contribute to a better understanding of the long-term safety of disposal facilities. This interactive session consists of three parts and is based on the development of specific case studies. \nThe first case study will address the impact of climate-driven changes in precipitation on the stability of engineered multi-layer covers used for near-surface disposal facilities. The second case study will examine the effects of climate change on groundwater flow and radionuclide transport\, both in shallow and deeper systems. The third case study will focus on the impact of climate change on landscape evolution over different temporal and spatial scales and its implications for safety. During this session\, exercises will be provided to help participants gain a better understanding of the timing\, amplitude and impact of the relevant processes and their uncertainties. \nTargeted audience and background knowledge \nAs the impact of climate change is relevant for all types of disposal systems\, across all relevant timeframes and in all possible climatic settings\, participation is open to all EURAD-2 partners\, including stakeholders\, end-users and representatives of civil society. \nThe required background knowledge is a basic understanding of the main components of different types of disposal facilities (surface\, near-surface\, shallow geological and deep geological). No specific prior knowledge related to climate science is required. DESCRIPTION:This talk will examine the role of microorganisms in deep geological repositories (DGRs) for nuclear waste. We will explore who these microbes are\, how they survive in extreme environments\, and how their activity affects the safety of the repository over thousands of years. \n\nMicrobial Diversity: the key groups of bacteria\, fungi\, and archaea found in engineered barriers (like bentonite clay) and the surrounding host rock will be identified.\nEnvironmental Limits Microbial survival is restricted by the harsh conditions inside a repository. We will discuss how high temperatures\, radiation\, high clay density\, and changes in water and oxygen levels control whether microbes stay dormant or become active.\nImpact on Repository Safety Microbial activity can change how well the barrier system works. SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn | Polish Radioactive Waste Management Plant R&D Program
DESCRIPTION:About\nThe presentation outlines the strategic role and planned research and development (R&D) program of the Radioactive Waste Management Plant (ZUOP)\, which is the sole operator of radioactive waste disposal facilities in Poland and is responsible for the management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. The program is closely aligned with the national policy framework and addresses key challenges related to the safe operation\, closure\, and future expansion of waste management infrastructure\, including the existing repository in Różan and the planned development of new near-surface and deep geological repositories.\nThe R&D activities are focused on ensuring the long-term safety and effectiveness of radioactive waste management systems across their entire lifecycle. A significant component concerns the continued safe operation and eventual closure of the existing repository\, including the assessment of engineered barriers\, investigation of material ageing processes\, and analysis of radionuclide migration in the environment. In parallel\, the program addresses the complex task of retrieving and managing historical waste stored at the site\, with emphasis on safety\, waste characterisation\, and evaluation of suitable processing and disposal pathways.\nA major priority is the development of a new near-surface repository\, which requires comprehensive site selection studies\, including geological\, hydrogeological\, and environmental analyses\, as well as the design of engineered barrier systems and repository structures. The program also includes the formulation of waste acceptance criteria and the development of monitoring systems to ensure safety during operation and after closure. Research on multibarrier systems plays a key role\, focusing on the selection and testing of materials\, modelling of radionuclide transport\, and the design of safe waste packages and containers.\nIn addition\, the program supports the development of advanced methods for waste treatment and conditioning\, including mechanical\, chemical\, and thermal processing\, as well as immobilization techniques based on cementitious and geopolymer matrices. These efforts aim to address both existing waste streams and future waste arising from nuclear power plants\, including more complex and organic waste forms.\nLong-term objectives of the program include the establishment of a deep geological repository for high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel\, supported by the creation of a Polish Underground Research Laboratory (PURL). SUMMARY:EURAD-2 webinar – Domain Insight 4.2.1 on perturbations
DESCRIPTION:The host rock is the natural barrier that hosts the underground structure of the geological disposal facility (GDF). It  has a crucial contribution in either the isolation of the waste (crystalline rock) or the containment of radionuclides in the waste (clay and salt rocks). The host rock can be perturbed by the chemical and physical interactions between barriers in the post-closure evolution of a disposal system with natural and engineered barriers\, geomorphological processes induced by climate change and tectonic activity. Perturbations to the host rock are also made during construction\, operation and closure of the GDF. The overall goal of this Perturbations domain is to characterize the potential impact of disposal facility construction\, operation and closure on the natural geological barrier as extracted from the EURAD Roadmap goals breakdown structure (GBS). This is supplemented by typical activities\, according to phase of implementation\, needed to achieve this characterization of perturbations. SUMMARY:InCoManD webinar | Peridynamic models for corrosion damage and fracture
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nMaterials degrade in various ways: some corrode\, some erode\, some fracture. I will discuss our recent results on quantitative predictions for these phenomena. These results are obtained using Peridynamic (PD) models\, which offer new ways to simulate complex problems by eliminating restricting assumptions inherent in classical models\, like differentiability of the unknowns. I will explain how these models differ from those based on partial-differential equations and show why they may offer better solutions for simulating the evolution of corrosion damage\, for example. Three-dimensional models for pitting corrosion\, intergranular corrosion\, crevice corrosion\, galvanic corrosion\, and stress corrosion cracking will be presented. Since PD models tend to be computationally costly\, I will present a new discretization approach\, the Fast Convolution-Based Method (FCBM) for efficient PD simulations. Extensions of these models to other similar types of physical phenomena\, like erosion\, melting and dissolution\, coupled with fracture or not\, are possible. \nSpeaker\nDr. Florin Bobaru is the Robert W. Brightfelt Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his M.Sc. in Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids from the University of Bucharest\, Romania in 1997\, and Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University\, Ithaca\, NY\, USA in 2001. He is one of the first contributors to peridynamic modeling for dynamic fracture and damage and has introduced peridynamics for corrosion damage. He was a Visiting Professor/Visiting Scholar at the University of Padova\, Italy (2015\, 2022)\, Caltech (2011)\, Cambridge University (2008)\, and Sandia National Laboratory (2002-2004\, 2005\, 2009). He organized the first Workshop on “Nonlocal Damage and Failure: Peridynamics and Other Nonlocal Models”\, sponsored by the USACM and held in San Antonio\, Texas\, in 2013. In October 2023\, he co-organized and taught an advanced course at CISM\, Udine\, Italy\, on “Peridynamic Models for Material Degradation”. He is the editor of the “Handbook of Peridynamic Modeling” (2016)\, an Associate Editor for the “Journal of Peridynamics and Nonlocal Modeling” (Springer)\, and a regional editor for “International Journal of Fracture” (Springer). DESCRIPTION:Training Workshop on Experimental Databases and Data Management (Including exchange with external experts)\nCourse Description\nThe management\, preservation\, and exploitation of experimental data are becoming increasingly important challenges in large collaborative research programmes. This training workshop will provide an overview of current practices\, tools\, and challenges related to experimental databases in the field of radioactive waste management. Through presentations from EURAD-2 work packages\, external experts\, and end-users\, participants will become aware of the importance of collection\, organisation\, validation\, sharing\, and long-term maintenance of experimental data. \nThe workshop will present practical examples of database development and use\, including thermo-hydro-mechanical properties of bentonite\, sorption and transport parameters\, thermodynamic databases\, and data management approaches used in other scientific and industrial domains. Particular attention will be paid to metadata strategies\, data quality assurance\, interoperability\, long-term sustainability of databases\, and emerging opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. \nThe event will also provide a forum for discussion between researchers\, database developers\, end-users\, and project managers on best practices and future needs for experimental data management in radioactive waste management research. Participants will have the opportunity to raise questions\, discuss practical challenges encountered in their own activities\, and exchange experiences with experts from different disciplines and organisations. \nTarget Audience\nThe workshop is intended for all EURAD-2 partners and external stakeholders interested in scientific data management and knowledge preservation: \n\nResearchers and PhD students involved in experimental programmes related to radioactive waste management.\nData producers\, data managers\, and database developers\nModellers and performance assessment specialists using experimental data.\nKnowledge management professionals and project coordinators.\nWaste management organisations\, technical support organisations\, regulators\, and other EURAD-2 end-users.\n\nLearning Outcomes\nUpon completion of this training workshop\, participants will become aware of the importance of collection\, organisation\, validation\, sharing\, and long-term maintenance of experimental data\, as well as emerging digital tools for enhancing data exploitation. They will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the role of experimental databases in supporting radioactive waste management research and implementation programmes.\nIdentify key principles and good practices for experimental data collection\, documentation\, validation\, and preservation.\nRecognise the importance of metadata and data governance for ensuring data quality\, traceability\, and reuse.\nCompare different approaches to database development and maintenance across scientific domains.\nEvaluate challenges associated with integrating heterogeneous datasets and ensuring long-term accessibility.\nAssess the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence and machine learning for experimental data management and exploitation.\nEngage with end-user perspectives and identify requirements for future database initiatives within the EURAD-2 framework.\n\nRecommended Background\nParticipants should have a general scientific or technical background related to radioactive waste management\, geosciences\, materials science\, chemistry\, environmental sciences\, engineering\, or data management. No prior expertise in database development is required.
