XXX Course | RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT

Radioactive waste toxicity requires a safety management in conditions which ensure the minimum risk to people and the environment, well within the established limits.
The course provides current knowledge of the radioactive waste management, and the Spanish radioactive waste plan. This thirtieth course updates the knowledge of radioactive waste management, through the experience and knowledge of professionals of the sector; It analyzes current problems, foreseeable ones and their solutions.
This course is included in the MSc of Nuclear Science & Technology of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM).
The course contents are:
-Generation, characterization and classification of radioactive waste.
-Radioactive waste in Nuclear Power Plants and Radioactive facilities.
-IAEA Fundamental Safety Principles.
-Criteria and objectives of radiological protection.
-Characterization of radioactive waste.
-Basic management and storage criteria.
-Selection, characterization and evaluation of sites.
-Low and medium level waste storage.
-Temporary and definitive storage of waste of high activity.
-Pollutant’s dispersion in geological environment and in the biosphere.
-Safety of nuclear facilities decommissioning.
-Legal framework and quality guarantee.
-The Spanish Radioactive Waste Company. The National Radioactive Waste Plan.
-Institutional aspects and international situation.
-Social participation in decision-making for the management of radioactive waste.
The course includes two technical visits: “El Cabril” a waste storage facility (Córdoba) and to the dismantling of the “José Cabrera” Nuclear Power Plant (Guadalajara).
Important note: All lectures will be given in Spanish and will take place on Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. CET.
