Organisation Description

The Vandellós I Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is located in the municipality of Vandellós i L’Hospitalet de l’Infant, Tarragona, Spain. It began commercial operation in 1972 and was shut down in 1989. Stage 2 of dismantling, conducted by Enresa between 1998 and 2003, involved the removal of all buildings, systems, and equipment outside the concrete pressure vessel. The concrete pressure vessel, which contains irradiated graphite, has been sealed and will remain so for 25 years, during which the plant is in a latency period. After this period, total dismantling is planned.

The NPP also features an Information Centre that provides insights into Enresa’s dismantling activities, the technologies used for decommissioning, and management of the resulting radioactive waste. Technical visits are available upon request.
