DI Webinar | 4.3.1 – Geological and Tectonic Evolution in Deep Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste
January 20, 2027 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
About
Understanding geological and tectonic evolution is fundamental to the long-term safety assessment of deep geological repositories for radioactive waste. This webinar provides an overview of how geological processes operating over thousands to millions of years, including tectonic deformation, faulting, seismicity, volcanism, erosion, glaciation, groundwater evolution, and climate change, are evaluated within repository programmes.
Drawing on the EURAD-2 Domain Insight Geological and Tectonic Evolution, the webinar discusses how geological information contributes to site selection, repository design, safety assessment, and regulatory licensing. Attention is given to long-term geological stability and the assessment of natural processes that may influence repository performance over geological timescales.
Speaker
Nicklas Nordbäck is Senior Specialist at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) and holds a PhD in geology from the University of Turku. His expertise focuses on structural geology, brittle fault systems, fault reactivation, palaeoseismology, and the tectonic evolution of crystalline bedrock. He has more than twenty years of experience in geological characterisation, repository-site investigations, geological mapping, and multidisciplinary subsurface studies. His work has included geological investigations supporting the Olkiluoto spent nuclear fuel repository programme, geothermal-energy research, and international expert assignments related to radioactive waste management.
