Lasers with petawatt peak power enable the development of advanced ultra-compact particle accelerators and light sources. Dedicated target areas are optimized for the investigation and application of relativistic laser-plasma processes by in-house and external researchers. The petawatt laser DRACO (Dresden laser acceleration source) HZDR operates a state-of-the-art high-power ultra-short pulse laser system, dedicated and optimized for the investigation of relativistic laser plasma physics.
Within the PENELOPE project (Petawatt ENergy-Efficient Laser for Optical Plasma Experiments) a High-peak power operation at the Petawatt level and High-average power performance at a repetition rate of 1 Hz are combined.
