The School is designed to enhance both the technical knowledge and practical skills of professionals at the beginning of their careers in the field of nuclear decommissioning. The curriculum covers the full spectrum of decommissioning activities, including:
- Transitioning from operation to decommissioning;
- Development of decommissioning strategies and selection of dismantling approaches;
- Site characterization and inventory preparation;
- Regulatory frameworks and stakeholder involvement;
- Project planning, management, and cost estimation;
- Selection and application of dismantling technologies;
- Material and radioactive waste management;
- Decommissioning completion and end-state planning.
The programme is delivered by experienced international experts and combines lectures, practical exercises, and technical visits to provide participants with valuable hands-on experience.
The School will take place over two weeks:
- 24–28 August 2026 – Vienna, Austria, including practical activities at the IAEA Laboratories in Seibersdorf;
- 31 August–4 September 2026 – Trnava, Slovakia, featuring a comprehensive case study based on the decommissioning of the Bohunice V1 Nuclear Power Plant, together with technical visits to the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear site and the National Radioactive Waste Repository in Mochovce.
Participants are expected to attend the full programme in person and are encouraged to complete the relevant IAEA e-learning modules on decommissioning and radioactive waste management beforehand.
