HZDR operates advanced laboratories and hot cells dedicated to the investigation of activated and contaminated materials. The hot cells feature shielding walls of up to 150 mm, enabling the safe handling of specimens with activities up to 5·10¹² Bq Co-60. The facilities are equipped for a wide range of material characterisation and mechanical testing, including cutting, grinding, polishing, etching, and thinning of specimens, as well as microhardness measurement, static and dynamic testing using servo-hydraulic systems, impact testing, and Vickers hardness measurements. Additional equipment includes furnaces with inert gas annealing atmospheres and an electromechanical universal testing machine (Inspekt Desk) with a Small Punch Test setup, supporting advanced studies of material behaviour under extreme conditions.
