Organisation Description

The Josef Underground Laboratory (UL) is situated 60 km south of Prague within a belt of metamorphosed volcanic and volcano-sedimentary rocks, primarily tuffs and tuffites, later intruded by granodiorites. Operated by the Centre of Experimental Geotechnics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, CTU in Prague, the laboratory is primarily intended for education, training, and research and development. Experiments focus on topics relevant to geological deep repositories, including the behaviour and long-term stability of swelling clays, hydraulic and gas permeability of rock masses, large-scale in-situ tests (buffer, backfills, plugs), and tracer studies.

Potential for Mobility

The Josef UL is accessible for all types of activities, including training, internships, and technical visits.

Potential Type of Collaboration

Sharing of technical expertise; participation in working groups; access to data or facilities; joint research initiatives; training programmes or knowledge transfer activities.
