Organisation Description

Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf GmbH (NES) is Austria’s central organisation for the management of radioactive waste (RAW). It oversees all RAW generated in Austria, including waste from medicine, industry, research, decommissioning of nuclear (research) facilities, historical applications (e.g., Ra-226 bearing waste), and legacy waste. NES operates comprehensive infrastructure for the collection, sorting, treatment, conditioning, and interim storage of low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW); it does not manage high-level waste or spent nuclear fuel. All buildings and equipment were modernised or newly constructed between 2008 and 2020, representing the latest state-of-the-art technologies for LILW treatment. The NES Waste Management Plant is available for technical visits.
